Champions League: What has been said?

UEFA said in a statement: “The final was originally scheduled to take place at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul but, following the UK government’s decision to place Turkey on its red list of Covid-19 travel destinations, staging the final there would have meant none of the clubs’ domestic fans would be able to travel to the game.

“After a year of fans being locked out of stadiums, UEFA thought that everything needed to be done to ensure the supporters of the two finalist teams could attend.

“UEFA discussed moving the match to England but, despite exhaustive efforts on the part of the Football Association and the authorities, it was not possible to achieve the necessary exemptions from UK quarantine arrangements.”

Prior to the decision, talkSPORT host Alan Brazil fumed at UEFA for ruling out Wembley so sponsors can attend, insisting fans should’ve been prioritised.

He said: “We’re not interested in your VIPs and your sponsors, we’re interested in two sets of supporters!

“They would gladly go to the game in England with no risk of catching anything going abroad, jumping on planes.

“Let’s think about the two team’ supporters, for God sake. Why don’t they have it in England, not Portugal?!

“If it’s over in Portugal, the Prime Minister has got to get involved. This is strange year and we have to protect, so why should the fans have to go and leave the country when they’re two English sides?!

“I know there are rules and UEFA have to look after their sponsors and companies who put vast amounts of money into the game, the UEFA family etc etc, but surely this is an exception this year.

“If they have got to isolate [if the game is in England] so be it, those are the rules – we don’t like being stuck at home, we don’t like not being able to go in a pub or a restaurant, we’ve had to put up with it, so why can’t they?

“It makes common sense, never mind looking after their own, it makes common sense that in this strange time the fans should get more tickets and the game should be played in England and not Portugal, surely!”
