Betting on the 2021 MSI Knockout Stage makes a lot of sense as it consists of two match-ups that are inherently one-sided. This, in turn, means that upsets are unlikely to happen — always a positive thing whenever we’re putting our hard-earned money on the line! Royal Never Give Up will be taking on PSG Talon this Friday, with DWG KIA facing off against the LEC champions MAD Lions the day after. Once the dust settles, the two teams left standing will then clash for all the marbles on Sunday, the 23rd of May in what’ll surely be a Best of 5 for the history books!
It’s the classic favorite vs. underdog sort of set-up and, as usual, there’s a bit of spice thrown in just for good measure. The favorites will almost certainly win out (as is so often the case), but that doesn’t mean they won’t struggle a bit along the way.
That’s perhaps been the leitmotif of the entire tournament as well: inconsistency from everyone involved. Rarely did DWG or RNG dominate as much as we anticipated, and the same can be said for the two Western representatives as well — Cloud9 and MAD Lions had huge swings in performance. The LCS champions arguably had higher highs, but their lows were downright dreadful. Conversely, the Lions never reached quite the same heights (i.e. beating both DWG KIA and RNG) but they were a lot more consistent and didn’t struggle with the most basic things (despite being vastly less experienced than their North American peers).
Now, with the shift to Best of 5s, we’ll finally get to see who’s better than whom and just how big of a gap there is between the four competitors left. The double round robin format is invariably exciting, but it lacks the depth and nuance that a full-fledged Best of 5 brings to the table. That’s when strategy, preparation, resilience, and sheer mental fortitude come into play.

DWG KIA and Royal Never Give Up are undoubtedly the biggest favorites but they’re far from infallible, and that’s hugely important going forward as it’ll empower both PSG and MAD. There’s no aura of invincibility around the LPL and LCK champions: they’re “just” exceptional at the game, but they make mistakes as well.
Then again, whether or not PSG and MAD have the tools to punish and exploit said mistakes still remains to be seen. Based on all empirical evidence, though, the odds of them pulling off an upset are rather slim, if not non-existent.
2021 MSI Knockout Stage Betting | Royal Never Give Up vs. PSG Talon
Objectively evaluating PSG Talon and their overall power level feels nigh impossible at this point in time. Are they a layered challenger worthy of respect and admiration? Without a doubt, but that’s pretty much the only thing we’ve been able to extrapolate thus far. They’ve had a couple of standout performances, but we’ve yet to see them in a Best of 5. Moreover, while they were surprisingly competitive against teams most folks deemed superior, there’s still a noticeable gap between them and the LPL champions; in other words they’re pretty darn great but not great enough for it to matter.
On the one hand, they have more than enough experience to compete at the highest of levels, along with respectable champion pools and strategic depth. On the other, they’re going up against Royal Never Give Up — a team that is not only a shoo-in for the finals but also the frontrunner to win this year’s Mid-Season Invitational.
Still, PSG are the real deal and if they prepare a couple of spicy drafts and bring their “A” game they should be able to give RNG a run for their money. In any case, expect an absolute barnburner that may even go the five-game distance, depending on how well PSG can execute.
2021 MSI Knockout Stage Betting | DWG KIA vs. MAD Lions
Much like the LPL champions, DWG haven’t been all that consistent lately. Well, at least not when compared to what everyone expected coming into the tournament. Still, with just two losses on the board (both of which came at the hands of RNG), it’s hard to criticize them all that much. They’ve been making a slew of unforced errors, but they (almost) always found a way to correct course and get the win. More importantly, they’ve been steadily improving as time went on. They’re still nowhere near as commanding as we thought they’d be, but they’re commanding enough to (at the very least) take down MAD Lions and reach the 2021 MSI finals.
It’s all a matter of styles and match-ups, and based on the two DWG vs. MAD games we’ve seen thus far, it’s pretty much impossible to side with the LEC champions on this one. They weren’t able to mount much of an offensive against the defending World Champions, and it certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying. For each and every single mistake they made, DWG made sure to punish and capitalize like their lives depended on it. That’s the thing: you give them an inch and they’ll take a country mile; they’re always looking to snowball and create an insurmountable lead.
So, naturally, everyone’s siding with DWG KIA on this one and we’ll definitely follow suit — it’s the only logical option. They might drop a game in the process, but anything more than that feels like an overly optimistic stretch.
