With Leo Messi moving countries, the French top-flight league is getting more and more interesting, and many experts are moving their attention to Ligue 1. We cashed our 1st banker of the season with Atletico Madrid beating Celta Vigo 2-1 last weekend and for our 2nd banker, we’re flying to France to preview and share our top pick from one of the most expected games of the week.
Nice vs. Marseille
Sunday, August 22, 2021 – 02:45 PM EDT at Allianz Riviera
After winning the title in Ligue 1 with Lille, probably the biggest upset in the European top leagues, Christophe Galtier has decided to step down from his role as head coach after four years in charge. Despite qualifying in the Champions League, he felt that the four-year cycle was long enough for him.
After being linked with a move to Napoli and Lyon he finally decided to join Nice, declaring that he loves the “colossal” future project despite not playing in the European competitions this term. After 2 domestic fixtures, Nice are sitting 4th in the standings with 4 points, 4 goals scored and 0 conceded.
After a 1st goalless draw at home against Reims, a game they controlled from the 1st till the final whistle and created many goals opportunities, Nice played Lille on the road, reigning champs and Galtier’s former club. They absolutely destroyed Lille, beating them 4-0 (3-0 at Half Time). They allowed Lille to control the possession, but they were deadly on the break scoring 4 goals from 7 shots on target.
Galtier is a winner, has great coaching knowledge, and probably the most important plus is that he knows how to develop young talents. If not this season, definitely next term he will play in the Champions League with Nice.
On the other side, Marseille will play their 1st full season under Jorge Sampaoli. The Argentinian took over on March 8 winning 16 points in his 1st 7 fixtures with the French giants. Marseille have become a possession team, an all-out attacking side fully packed with amazing players who can score goals for fun.
He changed the tactics from day 1, play with a three back-line that allows the wing-backs to push very high and help the attacking player, with either crosses or enter in the middle and create spaces. That’s why most of their games will be high-scoring games. They still have many issues at the back, but they try to score more than concede.
They kicked-ff their domestic season with a crazy comeback. They were down 2 goals at halftime, but they managed to score 3 goals in 12 minutes and beat Montpellier 3-2 on the road. Then, they hosted Bordeaux and they entered 2nd half with a 2 goals lead thanks to goals by Under and Payet. What happened next? Bordeaux with 28% possession in the 2nd half and just 2 goals on target managed to score 2 goals and keep Marseille to a draw game. The game is unscripted, and Marseille are one of the most inconsistent teams but at the same time one of the best teams to watch.
We expect another thrilling game with Marseille visiting Nice, a tough team to play against, a team with a proper organization all over the pitch. Nice’s +175 price looks great but let’s see them more in action before jumping on them. Over 2.5 goals in the match is our banker for this week. Best of luck!!!
