Rafael Nadal vs. Jannik Sinner

Monday, June 7, 2021 – 10:00 AM EST on Court Philippe-Chatrier

Once again, the King of Clay steps on court. As the Ruler of the Realm that is the infinitely stretching sea of red clay within the boundaries of Philippe-Chatrier, Rafael Nadal vyes for his 14th Roland-Garros title, which would also be his fifth consecutive triumph.

Thus far, the journey for the Spanish warrior armed with a legendary leftie forehand and infinite grit has been quite straightforward. No sets have been lost yet, making it the newly celebrated 35-year old's 10th straight such victory at this venue.

As always, the murmurs have been there about whether El Toro from Marbella could possibly still endure, but with two clay-court titles in the lead-in and no problems to date, this title is still very much Nadal's to lose.

Once also a talented skier, Jannik Sinner switched courses to give professional tennis his all during his early teenage years. The 19-year old Italian is nothing short of a sensational talent, already in possession of ridiculously powerful groundstrokes.

Having improved his consistency, stamina and mental fortitude, Sinner is much less prone to running out of steam over the prolonged format, though he's had to battle to get here. Pierre Hugues-Herbert had the young talent on the ropes in the first match, holding match point and then serving for the match.

Jannik endured, and won it in five sets, before overcoming Gianluca Mager in four and Mikael Ymer in three, the latter most impressively so.

Can anyone stand up to Rafael Nadal on these courts? If so, then for how long? Those are questions that certainly must be asked of Jannik Sinner, who does have the sterling quality backhand and overall firepower required to hit through Rafa's defenses on these courts.

The pair have faced two times already, once at last year's Roland-Garros and once this year in Rome. On both occasions, Sinner has given Nadal a real scare, pushing the first sets to 7-5 and a tiebreak, whilst the second ended 6-4. In 2020, Sinner ran out of steam in the final set which ended 6-1 to Nadal, but he's better equipped to stand tall for the duration this time.

Even when running out of steam last year, Jannik just barely missed the cover on the game handicap. With the best online sportsbooks lining up an 8.5 handicap on the young Italian in this contest, with a better effort than last year it's expected he keeps it within the number this time around.

Sloane Stephens vs. Barbora Krejcikova

Monday, June 7, 05:00 AM EST on Court Suzanne-Lenglen

It's been quite a while since we saw anything near her best tennis from Sloane Stephens. The 28-year old American famously won the US Open in 2017, and after a strong 2018 in which she made the final here at Roland-Garros, she fell off the map completely.

Struggling wildly for consistent form and seemingly motivation to play as well, Sloane has meandered about and done precious little for the last few years. Mentions of a possible early retirement have been there, but at long last it seems that the former world no. 3 has found some form once more.

The surge started with a quarterfinal in Charleston, a semifinal in Parma, and has continued here with three quality wins against Carla Suarez-Navarro, Karolina Pliskova and Karolina Muchova. With her elite athleticism and counterpunching skills, Sloane can beat anyone when on song.

The pandemic break came unfortunately for most, but fortunately for some. During that time, Barbora Krejcikova reinvented herself as a singles player. Already a multiple time Major winner and former world no. 1 in doubles, the transition to singles success stemmed from a simple change in mindset.

Now, the 25-year old Czech is a force, kicking off the restart with a Round of 16 showing here last year. In 2021, Krejcikova made the Dubai final and has won her maiden WTA singles title, one of few in history to do so after being a world no.1 and Major winner in doubles.

With her baseline consistency, redirection, intelligence and deft touch, Barbora has been nigh unstoppable as of late, and is currently on an eight match win streak.

Whilst Stephens has found some form, and has plenty of firepower to go with her elite counterpunching, she's horribly inconsistent. That´s a nightmare against the absolute force that is Krejcikova right now. The Czech will move Stephens around intelligently, and it will take another pristine performance with a low unforced error count for the American to stay competitive.

Many online betting sites list Krejcikova as the reasonably sized favorite, but the spread still doesn't look big enough. If the Czech can execute the tennis that's led her to this win streak, the -3 games looks quite achievable.

Tennis Pick: Krejcikova -3.0 (-115) with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)
