2021 US Open Tennis Betting Odds To Win and Predictions

The US Open is finally here with qualifying action currently underway in New York at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The tournament runs from August 24 to September 12. There is a lot of qualifying action going on at the moment. If you are a diehard tennis fan, then you have to love all of the matches currently on to watch and wager on. The final qualifying day is on Friday with matches beginning at 11:00 a.m. EST. Then the real action will heat up with the first official day of the US Open on Monday.

This is a grueling tournament that takes a total of 25 days to complete. If you want to include the qualifying round, then there are 29 days of tennis action in New York for the US Open. Most people just like to pay attention to the final weekend, but there is a lot that goes into getting to the final weekend of the tournament. A guy like Novak Djokovic makes it look easy.

However, for the others that might go far in an upset bid, it takes a lot to get to that point in the tournament. It was weird not seeing Djokovic in the final days of the US Open last year. He was disqualified after hitting a line judge in the throat with a tennis ball. It was not intentional in the least, but yeah, that’s not going to fly.

Things weren’t going Djokovic’s way during his match against the No. 20 seed, Pablo Carreno Busta. He was down 6-5 in the first set and was clearly frustrated, hence nailing the judge with a tennis ball. The guy doesn’t have Nick Kyrgios type meltdowns, but Joker does go on his rants from time to time.

Djokovic is back and looking for revenge in the US Open. This time he will be going for a calendar Grand Slam, the first to do it in 52 years, and the 21st Grand Slam of his career. As long as he stays away from getting disqualified from matches, Djokovic is likely going far in New York. His biggest competition should be Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Top Contenders To Win The US Open

I wish I could say there is a surprise here, but nothing jumps out as too shocking. If there’s anything, maybe Tsitsipas was expected to be better than a +800 underdog. Djokovic is going for his 21st Grand Slam and rightfully deserves to be the clear favorite. There are some big names that aren’t present on the odds board in 2021. Djokovic will not have to contend with the likes of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, or Dominic Thiem. Federer is over the hill at this point in his career, but Nadal and Thiem might have made Djokovic nervous for a minute. I don’t know if I would have been nervous with Nadal playing against Djokovic on anything but clay, though.

US Open Preview and Prediction

To the surprise of no one, Djokovic is the favorite and isn’t getting plus money to win the US Open. You will have to lay juice on Djokovic, but it looks like it could be justified. He goes into the US Open with a season record of 38-5 for a winning percentage of 88.4%. Joker has already won three major titles in 2021 beginning with the Australian Open. He defeated Medvedev in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 for an easy time over the No. 4 seed.

Stefano Tsitsipas almost had Djokovic at the French Open. He won the first two sets and then just ran out of gas. Even down two sets, it looked like Djokovic was still feeling confident about the situation. Despite looking like a close match, Djokovic played the match well. He allowed Tsitsipas to run out of energy, and he just got picked to pieces in the final three sets. After Djokovic won the third set, there was a change of the atmosphere in France. It was pretty clear where that was heading.

Djokovic most recently won a major title at Wimbledon over Italian, Mario Berrettini. He cleared Berrettini in four sets. In that match, Djokovic came up short in the first set as well, 7-6 in a tiebreaker. After that it was lights out, as Djokovic turned things up to go three straight by a score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

Following that win, Djokovic opted to attend the Olympics after some back and forth over the decision. He ended up going despite not being very excited for the event and the results showed. Tennis is a mental game as any out there and Djokovic didn’t have his full focus. He lost against the player that he melted down against last year at the US Open in Pablo Carreno Busta, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6.

Is anyone game to upset Djokovic in the US Open? Remember that Tsitsipas was only a set away from upsetting him in the French Open. I think part of that match was by design for Djokovic, though. He had a huge stamina advantage on Tsitsipas. Djokovic didn’t have to do anything exotic after the second set to win in five. 23-year-old Tsitsipas is 48-14 this season and is ranked No. 3 on the ATP Tour. Only Medvedev and Djokovic are ahead of the Greek in the rankings.

Medvedev has a recent tour win in Toronto two weeks ago in the National Bank Open. It wasn’t the most difficult tournament for Medvedev, as he faced upset minded Reilly Opelka in the final round. Opelka did a tremendous job to get that far with his monster serve, but Medvedev had an answer for a 6-4, 6-4 win. He is coming off a slip up in Cincinnati, losing as the No. 1 seed to No. 4, Andrey Rublev, 6-2, 3-6, 3-6. He threatened to sue organizers after running into a camera, so that was something. From Djokovic hitting a line judge with a ball to Medvedev taking out a TV camera.

Medvedev goes into the US Open with a record of 40-10 in 2021. He is the No. 2 on the ATP Tour, but failed to beat Djokovic when he had the chance in the Australian Open. Medvedev and Djokovic met in the Australian Open Final, with the Serb upending the Russian, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets. When Djokovic is prepared and focused, there isn’t anyone that is going to touch him. With a chance to complete the calendar sweep in 2021, expect Djokovic to win his 21st Grand Slam. I would lay the small price now before his odds to win the US Open go up considerably.
