2021 Masters Tournament Picks and PGA Tour Odds Analysis

After the frustrations of 2020 and the rescheduled Masters in November, the golf fan now has their second Masters in six months. It is reported that the course will play tougher this time around with the dry weather forecast making conditions faster than ever.

Collin Morikawa to Bring Last Year’s Debut Experience to Fruition at the 2021 Masters Tournament

Last year, Collin Morikawa played down the importance of the experience of Augusta National, instead opting to say, that if his game was in good order that’s all that mattered. It is a significant trend in recent years, how well many players perform on their second outing at Augusta National. To illustrate that fact there have been several recent winners who rocked up for a second year, the likes of Jordan Spieth, Danny Willett and Charl Schwartzel.

Once you become knowledgeable about Augusta National’s nuances it’s usually because you have fallen victim to many of the pitfalls. As the old saying goes ignorance is bliss and that could be appropriate for debutants and second-year entrants. Logically, if you can be reasonably long off the tee, Augusta often comes down to players who can strategically approach the bentgrass greens by landing in the correct areas.

Collin Morikawa’s last tournament win was the WGC Workday Championship at Concession which was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin whilst taking its name from the iconic Ryder Cup concession of Tony Jacklin’s putt. We know that Morikawa loves Jack Nicklaus design courses given his win earlier in 2020 at Muirfield Village, Ohio.

What, I hear you say, does that have to do with this week?

The setup of the greens at the WGC Workday Championship at Concession was likened to the Augusta National greens by many, in fact, the recent WGC Dell Technologies Matchplay winner Billy Horschel said, “There’s so much slope on these greens. It’s like Augusta – there’s only so many hole locations on each green, and so you’ve got to be careful of the green speeds.” (Lavner, 2/27/2021).

If Morikawa’s laser iron play is tuned up this week, we can expect him to enjoy and be suited by the fast greens and he represents a strong look at the best online betting sites.

Matt Fitzpatrick Ideally Suited by This Week’s Firm, Fast Conditions.

A player, I believe will be better suited by this year’s faster conditions at Augusta is Englishman, Matt Fitzpatrick. I have long believed there is a correlation between results at Wentworth, London in England and players who win the Masters, like Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Angel Cabrera to name a few. Fitzpatrick fell away at last year’s PGA Championship on the European Tour at Wentworth after leading. That has become a theme for the Sheffield lad in recent months on the PGA Tour, but his results have been ultra-consistent. He made his 2021 PGA Tour debut in the fast-tough conditions of Riviera Country Club and looked perfectly suited. If this week’s event has similar conditions then Fitzpatrick could excel and let’s not forget he was 7th here in 2016 when his fellow Sheffield born compatriot, Danny Willett was champion.

Don’t Forget to Have a Saver on Jordan Spieth

I featured Jordan Spieth in yesterday’s write up for SBR and mentioned that we would be having a saver bet on the Texan. He is a confidence player, evidenced by his form over the years and three times he has backed up a tournament win with the one the following week. Mostly, it is a well held view that players struggle to win back to back events, let alone a major championship but the young Texan writes his own script. As I mentioned yesterday, for my golf pick, we will be supporting him at Bovada price of +1000.
