2021 Golden Globes Predictions & Betting Odds – 78th Golden Globes

The 78th Golden Globes are scheduled for February 28, 2021 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony will also have a secondary site in New York at the Rockefeller Center in the Rainbow Room. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have been hired for the hosting duties. They have a good rapport with one another and should make for a good show. Saturday Night Live is a shell of what it used to be in the 90’s, but Fey and Poehler can be good for a watchable skit here and there when they’re together. They are going to be on opposite coasts, with one in Hollywood and the other in New York.

Covid-19 has made producers have to be creative, and they drew up this idea with dual hosts reporting from different locations. Fingers crossed that we can go back to more of a normal Golden Globes, along with other award shows in 2020, though. Betting on the Golden Globes has quickly become the main reason for watching, at least for us sports bettors. At least as far as I’m concerned, I am not too interested if there isn’t any money on the line. It makes things a whole lot more interesting.

It was a really tough year for most industries around the world, and that includes movie studios. Many were forced to pause and improvise, while others caught a break. Sacha Baron Cohen and his team were fortunate to wrap up their filming before the pandemic hit. It was slated to be a Netflix exclusive from the get-go, so that was another obstacle that they were able to overcome. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is well represented at the 78th Golden Globes. Along with Cohen being nominated, his co-star, Maria Bakalova received rave reviews and is a favorite to win.

Worth noting is the dual first-time nominations for Leslie Odom Jr. This is the first time he’s been nominated for a Golden Globe, and he’s getting two nods for his work in One Night in Miami. Odom Jr. receives a nomination for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Song, for co-writing Speak Now. He has already won a Tony and Grammy for his performance in Hamilton. You can also include the Canadian sitcom, Schitt’s Creek, as a potential big winner on Sunday night. Catherine O’Hara should be preparing a victory speech.

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Nomadland
-200
The Trial of the Chicago 7
+100
Mank
+700
Promising Young Woman
+850
The Father
+2000

This is a two-movie race between Nomadland and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Mank was an early front-runner to notch plenty of accolades during award season, but it has faded away in favor of The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Nomadland. Trial of the Chicago 7 was always projected to be a nomination. When it comes to Nomadland, it made an impressive world premier at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival and garnered the attention of critics immediately.

The film was simultaneously released on Hulu and in theaters on February 19. If you can’t make it to a theater because of Covid-19, then the option is there on Hulu. While the movie might feel like a true story, it is based on a 2017 non-fiction book written by Jessica Bruder. The story is based around a woman named Fern who lived and worked in Empire, Nevada, a small town in the desert.

When the plant she worked at closed, and her husband died, she embarked on a long road trip throughout the west searching for work. It might not be a movie for everyone, but after watching it tonight, it’s certainly a well put together film. From my viewpoint, it feels like a documentary at times, hence the belief that the movie is based on a true story. The cinematography and Frances McDormand are what make it for me. It might be boring for many, but the voters are likely going to disagree.

Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy

Hamilton
+100
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
+100
The Prom
+350
Palm Springs
+1400
Music
+2200

This is always one of the more perplexing categories to me. Including a musical and comedy in the same category doesn’t exactly go together in some cases, but here we are, with total opposites dueling in the stretch for the Best Motion Picture award for a musical or comedy. It appears to be down to Hamilton and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, with a potential late bid from Palm Springs to make it interesting.

Hamilton and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm both received solid reviews. However, these two films couldn’t be any more different. I know people who thought the follow-up to the first Borat was funnier, but felt that I laughed more during the first. Don’t get me wrong, I still laughed, and pulling off a sequel to match the first film is always difficult. And it also doesn’t make the first film “better” from a filmography sense either. If we want to go even deeper, his skits on Da Ali G Show as Borat were funnier than anything in either movie. This is of course all subjective, though.

The second has Maria Bakalova, which the first film did not, so that does provide some separation in terms of a well put together movie. She stole the spotlight from Sacha Baron Cohen, and is likely going to win herself a Globe for her performance. Without Bakalova’s performance, I’m not so sure the movie turns out as well as it did. Expect her to carry the Borat team to a win for Best Motion Picture in a musical or comedy.

Best Supporting Actress In A Motion Picture – Drama

Amanda Seyfried (Mank)
-115
Olivia Colman (The Father)
+225
Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy)
+330
Jodie Foster (The Mauritanian)
+1000
Helena Zengel (News of the World)
+1100

Mank might end up being a disappointment in the Best Motion Picture category, but I foresee them not going empty handed at the Golden Globes on Sunday night. Amanda Seyfried stands out in this film, which is a throwback to the 1930’s and the true story of Herman J. Mankiewicz.

It follows the alcoholic and gambling addict screenwriter as he goes through the journey of writing Citizen Kane. Despite his pitfalls, Mankiewicz was one of the most influential writers from his day, and he wrote what many people believe is the best film of all time. Gary Oldman was a nice selection for Mankiewicz, but this film really takes off because of Seyfried.

I thought Oldman was good, though had more to offer in Mank. Seyfried, who looks exactly like her real-life counterpart in the movie, plays Marion Davies. Davies appears in the movie as the mistress of newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst.

She was a well-known actress throughout the 1920’s and 30’s. Her presence adds a nice dynamic to this black and white film that attempts to reflect the times of when Citizen Kane was being written.I think the biggest problem with this movie is that she isn’t in it enough. The way I see it, there’s only one option to win this category.

AMANDA SEYFRIED

Best Supporting Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama

Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and The Black Messiah)
+100
Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7)
+200
Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami)
+260
Bill Murray (On the Rocks)
+1000
Jared Leto (The Little Things)
+1800

From the Best Supporting Actress to Best Supporting Actor category at the Golden Globes. I don’t think this is as much of a slam dunk as Amanda Seyfried, or well deserved, but Daniel Kaluuya is hard to ignore in his role in Judas and The Black Messiah.

While Sacha Baron Cohen and Leslie Odom Jr. could threaten for the win, Kaluuya is the likely winner. Judas and The Black Messiah centers around the Black Panther Party and the FBI. He was in the Marvel movie, Black Panther, and seemed like a perfect fit for this film. The plot which is true, features an FBI informant who betrayed Black Panther leader, Fred Hampton.

Kaluuya plays Hampton, who was the chairman of the Black Panther Party in the late 1960’s in Chicago. If you are familiar with the true life story, then you aren’t going to need any other explaining, and I don’t want to give too much away for those that haven’t. It’s most certainly worth a watch, and Kaluuya’s performance alone garners attention and accolades. Despite him being the favorite, even money still carries nice value.

Best Actor In a TV Series – Musical/Comedy

Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek)
-110
Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso)
+100
Ramy Youssef (Ramy)
+550
Don Cheadle
+1000
Nicholas Hoult
+1200

This more than likely comes down to Eugene Levy and Jason Sudeikis. Levy is looking for his first Golden Globe after being shut out for his portrayal of Johnny Rose in the sitcom Schitt’s Creek. He has Emmys, but has not been able to grab a Golden Globe yet. It’s going to be close, and certainly I wouldn’t argue with him winning here. If it wasn’t for Jason Sudeikis’s performance in Ted Lasso he’d be a shoo-in for a win here.

However, Sudeikis has impressed and surprised in his role as Ted Lasso. He is hired to be the head coach of a professional soccer team in England, though having no experience for the job. I was expecting not to like this show at all, but Apple TV really came through with this one.

It couldn’t have been cheap to hire Sudeikis, but money well spent from what I’ve seen. I like Eugene and would not be opposed to seeing him finally scoring a Golden Globe. However, Sudeikis’s performance in Ted Lasso is hard to ignore. He is deserving no doubt, and I think that’s the direction they’re going to go.
