Ravens Cover Spread With Insane Last-Second Safety For Monday Night Football Bad Beat

There are bad beats, then there is what happened to those who had the Browns on Monday Night Football in Week 15.

Cleveland entered its AFC North showdown with the Baltimore Ravens as 3- to 3.5-point underdogs. After a back-and-forth final seven minutes of the game, it seemed like it was going to end with the Ravens winning by three points after a Justin Tucker field goal with just seven seconds left.

Not so fast, my friends.

The Browns had two seconds on the clock when they got the ball back. Baker Mayfield completed a pass to Kareem Hunt, and after a series of lateral pitches and cross-field throws, the ball went out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

Final score: Ravens 47, Browns 42.

The effect was felt across the betting community. PointsBet‘s Patrick Eichner told the Action Network’s Darren Rovell that it was one of the biggest swings of the year.

“It was huge for us,” Eichner said. “We had substantial liability on CLE +3. We needed the Ravens in a tight, low-scoring affair — missed out on the low-scoring part — but the final play was a big swing for the book.”

The SuperBook had more even action on the game than PointsBet. “It obviously hurt all the Browns bets but in terms of swing since there was so much money on each side it helped the book but nothing big,” the SuperBook’s Ed Salmons told Rovell.

BetMGM added that it was a six-figure swing for their book.

Here’s where the ball went on the play: Mayfield to Hunt, to Rashard Higgins, to Mayfield (who fumbled), to Jarvis Landry, back to Higgins (who fumbled), to Hunt, to Higgins then finally back to Landry, who ended up getting pushed out of the end zone by Marlon Humphrey.

As Rovell tweeted, there was one bettor at William Hill who made bank thanks to the Browns’ failed last-ditch effort:

But there was another massive wager that fell on the other side of the play — someone at FanDuel put $40,000 on an alternate spread of Browns +4.5 at -130. That wasn’t enough to avoid a heartbreaking defeat.
