Six dome games will help calm the nerves of all of us who had to navigate all the weather last week. We’re not entirely out of the woods though. Most of the games are looking fine, but I’ll be tracking the weather for NFL Week 9 throughout Sunday with a special focus on the winds in KC and TB.
This article will be updated leading right up to the games and here on Sunday morning with a final update around 12:30 pm ET.

Wind: 18 mph (Update: 20)
Wind Gusts: 32 mph
Fantasy Impact: The winds are going to be noticeable in this game, but they’re still not bad enough to expect a fantasy impact. Winds above 20 mph do become problematic for QBs, but there’s no chance sitting Patrick Mahomes makes sense even if the winds get worse. You might want to sit the kickers in this game out of an abundance of caution.
(Update: The winds are going to be noticeable for this game, but Patrick Mahomes has plenty of arm strength to cut through these winds. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce are still must starts. The winds make starting Boom-Bust Mecole Hardman that much riskier.
Teddy Bridgewater was already facing one of the league’s best pass defenses (7th in Pass DVOA) and the winds make it that much tougher. With Christian McCaffrey back and Mike Davis proving he’s a capable back, CAR will likely try to exploit KC’s far more vulnerable rush defense. At some point CAR will probably have to enter come-back mode and get the passing game going. The winds might actually help Robby Anderson who owns a lowly 10.3 average target distance. D.J. Moore has a average target distance of 12.6. He’s already having an unusually inefficient season with a catch rate of only 55.6% and only 3 red zone targets. I love Moore’s talent, but he should only be considered a weak WR3 heading into this week.)

Precipitation: Rain (Update: Light Rain)
Wind: 15 mph (Update: 17 mph)
Wind Gusts: 20 mph
Fantasy Impact: This is a forecast that might change. It’s looking like winds will be in the 15-20 mph range, but some forecasts are calling for sustained winds approaching 25 mph and gusts over 40. There will also be showers in the area, but they’re of lesser concern. Play your studs and use the weather to help with 50/50 decisions. You can probably find better kickers with all the dome games this week.
(Update: It looks like those early forecasts for strong winds were wrong, but we’re still looking at pretty stiff breezes from 16-18 mph and gusts in the 30s. Drew Brees is coming off an injury to his right shoulder, but Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders should be back. With his full complement of weapons, Brees won’t have to push the ball downfield much to effectively move the ball mitigating the winds impact on his game. Brees might sneak in to QB1 territory, but his upside is negligible. Michael Thomas is still a must start while Emmanuel Sanders and Jared Cook will need a TD to save their fantasy days.
Speaking of QBs with weapons. Tom Brady will enjoy an embarrassment of riches with Antonio Brown making his TB debut and Chris Godwin likely back from injury. Tom Brady is a QB1 for Week 9 and could put up a monster game if NO can keep the pace. How this passing game shakes out is anyone’s guess, but Brown will likely get a few plays dialed up just for him. Godwin’s day might depend on how recovered his broken finger is. Rob Gronkowski may need a TD or two to save their fantasy day because target volume won’t be there. Between battling an ankle injury, the winds, and a murky role amongst all the other pass catchers, Mike Evans is a very risky play but he has value with his role near the goal line in what could end up a high-scoring game.)
