Mike Tyson v Roy Jones Jr: The hardest punch of Superman’s career produced one of the most terrifying knockouts in boxing history

The name ‘Art Serwano’ is unlikely to be remembered by even the most knowledgeable boxing aficionado.

But the Ugandan is likely to feature in video compilations of the greatest (or most vicious, depending on your point of view) knockouts of all time.

Serwano faced Roy Jones Jr in 1992, long before he became the superstar fans around the world grew to know and love.

Jones, who is gearing up for his exhibition bout against fellow legend Mike Tyson next weekend, was controversially denied a gold medal during the Seoul Olympics Games and duly took his frustrations out on every opponent he faced.

Having sparred comfortably with Sugar Ray Leonard, he made the move to professional with consummate ease and amassed a record of 15 wins – all by way of knockout.

His speed, movement and sheer audacity made Jones a box office sensation and, after being taken the distance for the first time against Jorge Castro, he then faced Serwano.

The Ugandan ended a run of four straight defeats when he defeated Ernie Valentine to earn a shot against Jones at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Nevada, aptly named for what was to unfold.

Jones landed a sickening right hand to Serwano’s temple, which left the Ugandan crumpled in a heap
Serwano’s eyes began to roll worryingly around the back of his head

After a tentative start to the first round, Jones landed a range-finding jab before unloading with an overhand right which crashed home on Serwano’s temple.

As his arms and legs locked completely stiff, the journeyman fell agonisingly slowly to the canvas as the cameraman on the ring apron managed to capture his eyes rolling around in the back of his head.

While Jones celebrated the 17th win of his already distinguished career, Serwano eventually regained consciousness and managed to make it back to his feet.

Thankfully, the Ugandan recovered and would box again

Florida native Jones became one of the greatest boxers in history, winning titles all the way up from middleweight to heavyweight.

Serwano finished his career with a respectable 20 wins from his 30 fights, even taking on Richie Woodhall at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton.

But he will always be remembered for suffering one of the most impressive knockouts in boxing history at the hands of Roy Jones Jr.
