Louisville Cardinals vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Friday, October 09, 2020 – 07:00 PM EDT

oth Louisville and Georgia Tech will be looking to bounce back with both teams coming off two consecutive losses. A third straight loss would really sink the season for one of these teams which means we should see a high level of intensity in this matchup.

Louisville Has Not Live Up to Expectations

Coming into the season, Louisville were expected to have a high powered offense. After three games, that has certainly not been the case. Reigning ACC Coach of the Year Scott Satterfield will not be pleased with what he has seen so far and I would expect that he has made the necessary adjustments to get the most out of his team since they had this past weekend off. Even though they are taking a step down in terms of quality of competition, a third straight loss would effectively ruin their season before it really even got started here.

One of the first things that Louisville needs to clean up is their red zone offense. Too many of their possessions have ended in field goals instead of touchdowns which is why they’ve dropped two consecutive games. The one good thing if you like Louisville is that they’ve at least covered the spread in two of their three games. Depending on what line you got against Pitt in their last game, you should have at least got a push.

With that in mind, I think this is the perfect time to take Louisville. This line opened at -6.5 Louisville and action on Georgia Tech has seen the line move all the way to 4.5 with some 4’s available on the NCAAF odds page depending on where you shop. I do not understand this line movement at all because I think Louisville is the much better team here. For that reason, I’m very happy to lay the -4.5 (-105) with Louisville being offered at Heritage.

Georgia Tech Has Been Really Bad Lately

Georgia Tech will have to tighten up on defense if they want to win this game. They’ve allowed 86 points in their last two games which isn’t going to get you many wins, especially the way their offense has been struggling. Even though Georgia Tech got that upset win against Florida St in their opening game, they haven’t scored over 21 points yet this season.

A lot of that has to do with their struggles that their signal caller is having. Georgia Tech’s quarterback Jeff Sims has simply not been good enough for me to take the points with the Yellow Jackets. Sims’ 8 interceptions leads the nation and I see no reason to believe that he will suddenly improve in this game.

The Yellow Jackets can’t blame all of their struggles on Sims because as I’ve mentioned previously, their defense has been terrible. They’re giving up 270 yards through the air and 170 pm the ground per game. Until that changes, Sims will always be put in a position where he has to throw much more than necessary which we’ve seen is not a good thing. I’m taking the Under 64.5 (-105) at Heritage in a game with two quarterbacks that I don’t trust.

As bad as Sims has been lately, Louisville’s starting QB Malik Cunningham hasn’t been great either. In his last outing, he was 9/21 for 107 yards to go along with 1 touchdown compared to 3 interceptions. I’ll lay the points with Louisville and take the under with two quarterbacks who can’t stop turning the ball over which leads me to believe we see a more conservative approach from both offenses to limit the damage.
