Gennady Golovkin successfully defended his IBF middleweight title for a record 21st time by cruising to victory against Kamil Szeremeta on Friday night.
The 38-year-old from Kazakhstan sealed a seventh-round technical knockout after flooring his opponent four times, surpassing Bernard Hopkins for the most successful defences of a middleweight belt.
Golovkin’s incredible record now extends to 41-1-1 – and he wants a trilogy fight with the only man to get a draw or victory against him next.
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez – who got a controversial decision again Golovkin in September 2018 after their draw in 2017 – takes on Britain’s Callum Smith in Texas on Saturday night, and Golovkin is keen to face the winner.
“I’m excited to see who wins,” said Golovkin. “I want these guys.”
Golovkin had been out of the ring for 14 months before returning in style in Florida on Friday night – and showed no sign of slowing down despite being in his late thirties.
He knocked Szeremeta, the 31-year-old from Poland, down in the first, second, fourth and seventh rounds before the referee called an end to the fight.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Golovkin. “I told you I would come back after the Canelo fight.
“My performance was so good. I could have given more, I just needed more time to feel back. I’ve had a long break. But I am very proud of my team.
“This is a small step for my legacy. My next fight I want to show more.”
