Edu urges Arsenal fans to ‘believe’ in Mikel Arteta as Kieran Tierney insists ‘terrible’ Gunners must rally behind Spaniard

Edu has urged Arsenal fans to keep the faith with Mikel Arteta and insisted the Gunners’ current slump in form does not coincide with the work that is being put in on the training ground.

Burnley recorded their first ever win at the Emirates last weekend as a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang own goal saw the Clarets secure a 1-0 victory after Granit Xhaka was sent off for the hosts.

The result leaves Arteta’s side just five points clear of the relegation zone and without a Premier League win since November 1.

And Edu, the club’s technical director, also warned any disgruntled supporters that the club will not be splashing the cash during the January transfer window in an attempt to remedy their current ills.

Asked if Arsenal supporters needed to relax and not to worry, Edu – speaking in an interview conducted on Monday but arranged before the Burnley loss – replied: “Relaxing is too much.

“Just believe. Internally here, listen, we are doing well.

“My main message is that we are not talking about only one person, it is unfair to talk about Mikel, or Aubameyang because he is not scoring goals, or (goalkeeper, Bernd) Leno because he has to stop the goals.

“It is unfair to talk about one person, we are a football team, we have to talk about ourselves, talk about “we” and not “him” so that for me is the main message.

“The way I see things is very simple. It’s normal and easy to be driven by the results. But for me, the main point is when I see something in which I can see the future, see where we go, the way we’re building things, starting to see it on a daily basis.

“So the way we work, the way we train, the way we behave internally, if you see the quality of the work, if you see the quality of the people, if you see properly what’s happening here on a daily basis, it’s nothing to compare with the results.”

Kieran Tierney admitted Arsenal’s recent form has been ‘terrible’ but backed Arsenal’s fortunes to change under their ‘great manager’ Arteta.

“It’s not good enough,” he said.

“There is no way to disguise it. It’s terrible, to be honest. It’s not what we are, not where we are as a club.

“It’s not what the fans deserve, it’s not what the manager deserves, it’s not what the board and that deserve. It’s us players that need to take responsibility for this.

“It’s on us and nobody else. We have got a great manager and we believe in him 100 per cent. The blame is on us, nobody else.”
