Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his full support, and insists the manager WILL be backed with funds in the transfer window.
The Red Devils chief has spoken to supporters at a fan forum via Zoom, and responded to the latest calls for the Norwegian’s departure.
Further doubts were raised over Solskjaer this week following United’s 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at home, which leaves their Champions League hopes in the balance.
It also continued the team’s dreadful home form, having won just three of their eight games at Old Trafford in all competitions this season.
talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan told Solskjaer to ‘get his coat’ following the PSG defeat, and urged United to replace the ‘mediocre’ boss with a coach worthy of ‘the biggest job in world football’.
But Woodward has thrown his support behind the under-pressure manager, insisting he retains the faith of the club and that United need stability and consistency to get back to the top level.
He also said he has seen ‘positive signs’ from the team under the former striker and is sure Solskjaer is the right man in charge.
“What happens on the field is clearly our top priority, and while it’s not the same without fans in the stadium, we’ve seen lots of highs since our last meeting in April, with that 14-game unbeaten run to finish third in last season’s Premier League run and great wins against PSG and RB Leipzig on our return to the Champions League this season,” said Woodward.
“Of course, we recognise there’s more hard work ahead to achieve the consistency needed to win trophies.
“But we see positive signs on the pitch and the training ground that reinforce our belief in the progress being made by Ole, his coaching team and the players.”
Woodward also teased Manchester United’s transfer plans for the January transfer window.
United signed Bruno Fernandes last January, proof that it can be a crucial time to bring in fresh faces and inject the team with added quality.
But while Woodward insisted Solskjaer will be give more funds to improve his team, the chief suggested that may wait until next summer, and not in the forthcoming window.
“I told this forum back in April that we remained committed to strengthening the squad, while being disciplined in our spending during the pandemic,” Woodward added.
“I believe we’ve delivered on that, with the additions we made during the summer taking our total net spending to over €200m since summer 2019 – more than any other major European club over that period.
“We will continue to support Ole with a planned, long-term approach to recruitment, focused on the summer windows.”
