Last week we made mention of, probably, the biggest esports event in the calendar – at least in terms of production and prize pool, The International. The purpose was drawing attention to how some tournaments just hold a different level of prestige and necessity to be held in person… LAN.
Another event that I would put into this echelon of heritage, hype, and quality is IEM Katowice. Last year this Polish city, not one you may typically associate with a hotspot for gaming or esports had to cancel their audience. It is somewhat eerie to reflect on that time now. The Super Bowl was three weeks concluded, the rest of major sports in North America and Europe were alive and well, for the most part. However there was an increasing storm of a contagion moving west.
And this was when Carmac and Stunna delivered this address:
So this became the first premier CSGO event to run without the anticipated crowd. So after seeing that announcement and knowing just how hype the Spodek is annually, Katowice was one of the tournaments I somewhat expected to be pushed later in the year with the hope of hosting a crowd of some sort.
BUT…that is not the case. The Katowice event will proceed in some form. This is good news for a game that has seen an increase in its community major over major…over major dating back to its inception.
Whats more is not only with the CS tournament proceed, but the Katowice version will also host a Starcraft2 pool of players as well as the somewhat unexpected Warcraft3! ESL/IEM made the following announcement:
“All three tournaments are planned to be played without an audience, but as in person competition hosted on location in Europe. Should COVID-19 remain a major barrier to the safety of our talent, players and staff we will then revert to online play in Europe.”
Katowice is such a quality and historic event that it is a positive heading into a year that many are hoping will only be better for sport and esport!
